Chaton rivets are rivets embedded with cut imitations of gems – chatons. Like saddlery rivets, chaton rivets also consist of a head and a lower part. The head has the same shape as a saddlery rivet. The lower part with the shaft is concluded with a special bed, into which the cut jewelry stone made of glass is embedded.
The stones are cut with a facetted grinder. Facet grinding is a stone processing method in which the surface a large number of small straight facets is created through grinding. The type of grinding is chosen so as to make the best use of the natural qualities of the stone. Thanks to the superior grinder, chatons reflect light very nicely, have a beautiful color and sparkle. Glass chatons guarantee long color fastness unlike plastic substitutes, better resistance to scratching and the dulling of the stone surface.
Types and use of chaton rivets
In our offer of chaton rivets you can choose from several types:

Chaton rivets can be used in the manufacture of collars, leads, harnesses or clothes for dogs. In clothes production they are mainly used as a decorative element for shoes, handbags and bags. In the clothing industry, they find their application on jackets, shirts, coats and belts. When producing collars or harnesses, chaton rivets can be combined with other decorated components, such as:
- snap hooks decorated with chatons,
- chaton buckles on collars,
- tags on collars,
- stringing decorations,
- riveting decorations.
In the manufacture of haberdashery and clothing, chaton rivets can be combined with decorated western buckles. Chaton rivets can also be used on mini collars for small dogs, a supporting and connecting element for fixing half-rings, buckles or side release buckles. For leashes and collars for medium and large dog breeds, chaton rivets are not recommended for use as strength joints.
Things needed to rivet chaton rivets
1. Chaton rivet
You can choose chaton rivets based on shape, shaft length and the color of the chaton. Remember that for the proper selection of a rivet it is necessary to know the thickness of the joined materials. Optimally the height of the shaft should be about 1-2 mm for thinner material; with thicker materials it should be 2-3 mm greater than the thickness of the joined materials.

2. Puncher
A puncher is a steel tool thanks to which you can make a hole for the rivet through two thinner materials laid on top of one another at the same time. Punch sets contain six removable steel punches with a diameter of 1.9 to 4.7 mm. Round punchers can also be acquired individually, on average, from 1.59 to 16.8 mm.

3. Riveter and rubber mat
The best option is to buy a set for the riveting of chaton rivets, which includes a riveter and rubber mat. A riveter is suitable for a rivet head size of 6-7 mm. It is therefore suitable for all chaton rivets sold by us.

Riveting using a riveting set
1. Punching a hole for the rivet shank
Before applying a chaton rivet, we must first punch a hole in the material, similarly to a saddlery rivet. You can read how to choose the right size of the puncher and punch a hole in our article entitled “How to Manual Riveting”.
Punching a hole for the rivet using a round puncher
Insert the shaft from the tight side into the prepared hole. From the underside, fit the rivet head on the shank. Beware, the chaton will be from the tight side, head on the underside of the material.
Place the thus prepared rivet with the chaton on a rubber plate. During the very riveting, the head with the chaton is pushed into the rubber and does not get damaged. The plate absorbs the kinetic impact and the chaton does not get damaged.
We do not recommend using pads, wooden boards or other hard plastic plates for hole punching. Rubber mats with a hardness of 30-50 shore are suitable.
2. Unriveting
Place the riveter vertically on the rivet head and unrivet with a hammer blow. If possible, do this in the center of the rivet, otherwise it will be unriveted at a slope.

Riveting using a hand press
a. Closed chaton rivets
Chaton rivets can be riveted not only with hand tools, but also a hand press. The application of rivets using a hand press is faster, easier to unrivet the shaft and the work is not so physically demanding. The hand press has bolt holes on the bottom plate. If you have sufficient space on the worktop, it is good to attach the press permanently to the work desk.
As in hand riveting, a hole of appropriate size must first be punched into the material. Piercing preparations for the hand press are intended for this purpose, available in diameters from 1.4 to 4.7 mm.
The actual unriveting procedure for a chaton rivet is consistent with hand riveting. Fit the riveting preparation of appropriate size into the press. Each size of the chaton rivet has its own riveting preparation of the appropriate size and shape. It is not possible to apply one preparation on all types of rivets. The product is riveted with screws in the press.

Riveting procedure
- Put the rivet head into the hole from the reverse side of the material.
- Place the rivet head with the material into the bottom application preparation.
- Insert the shaft with the chaton perpendicularly in the top rubber preparation.
- The rivet will be unriveted by moving the lever from the upper to the lower position.

b. Self-drilling chaton rivets
A self-drilling chaton rivet has teeth on the end of the shank. It ends just like the classic self-drilling saddlery rivets. This shaft adjustment facilitates work with the rivet. When applying the rivet on thinner materials – leather, imitation leather, split leather and fabric, it is not necessary to pre-punch a hole for the shaft. A self-drilling rivet also passes through smooth leather with a thickness of 3 mm. When applied to thicker and harder materials, or when joining two materials, we recommend pre-opening the hole.
The procedure is the same like for the riveting of closed rivets, you just need to mark the rivet position on the tight side.
